The Union Oyster House is the oldest restaurant in the United States of America.
The building is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It was built in the early 1700's. Before it became a restaurant in 1826, it had been a dry-goods shop. In 1771 printer Isaiah Thomas published his newspaper The Massachusetts Spy from the second floor. In 1796 the Duke of Chartres lived in exile on the second floor and taught French to Boston merchants and young ladies. He returned to Europe in 1800, later to become the king of France as Louis Philippe from 1830 to 1848.
Today the Union Oyster House located at 41 and 43 union Street in Boston is a famous tourist destination where a large variety of seafood including raw oysters and local lobsters can be enjoyed.
